How an ex-hippie became a leading authority on herbs and nutrients from the world's remote places

Chris Kilham is known as the Medicine Hunter, and is the author of numerous books and has appeared on many television programs, including Dr. Oz, CNN, Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, and FOX News, for whom he writes a weekly health column about medicinal plants, sustainability, and holistic health.

Kilham has made a fascinating career of roaming the world in search of healing herbs and nutrients from nature. In this four-part series of interviews at Natural Products Expo West in 2011, Kilham speaks with WellWise.org Editor in Chief James Townsend about how he became fascinated by plants and their healing properties, and embarked on his unusual profession; how to we can be sure we're getting good product; the fate of the Amazon rainforest; and what herbs are showing a lot of promise now.

The problems with identifying herbs, and how to avoid a product that is not the real thing

Chris Kilham, aka The Medicine Hunter, speaks with James Townsend, editor in chief at WellWise.org about some of his early successes, with the help of shamans and indigenous peoples, in discovering certain healing herbs and bringing them to the United States. Kilham also addressesin this segment the trouble with some companies selling bogus herbs or the wrong varieties of herbs, and how that hurts everyone. segment the trouble with some companies selling bogus herbs or the wrong varieties of herbs, and how that hurts everyone.

Deforestation of the rain forests of the world and what you can do about it

Known as The Medicine Hunter, Chris Kilham spends much of his time in places such as the Amazon rain forest. In this final video in the WellWise.org interview with James Townsend, editor in chief, Kilham emphasizes the fact that despite having fallen off the mainstream media's radar, the destruction of the world's great rainforests continues apace. He warns that we are losing species of animals and plants as an astonishing pace.

Does Fish Oil Contain PCBs?

Adam Ismail of the Global Organization for EPA and DHA Omega-3s discusses a lawsuit filed in California in March of 2010 against a number of retailers of fish-oil products, claiming that they tested too high for PCBs, chemicals that have been banned or severely restricted in many countries since the 1970s and 80s because of the possible risks to human health and the environment.

Adam reveals that PCBs are found in virtually all agricultural products, and that the levels at which they were detected in several fish-oil brands are considered unacceptable only in California, which requires warning labels on products that exceed certain limits.
