Food Blog: Eat your tomatoes... because you're worth it At a recent conference on the concept of “beauty from within,” someone asked me what I do for my skin? Was it some expensive elixir? Was it a regular trip to the spa? I didn’t have an answer because I do very little for my skin, at least on the outside. I wash with a gently cleanser and use a serum that claims to diminish those pesky fine lines (I am not sure that it works), but most of all I wear a hat and sunscreen and I eat foods and take supplements rich in antioxidants. In case you need one more reason to add fish oil to your diet, on April 6, 2011, researchers from the Fox Chase Cancer Center presented breaking research showing that omega-3 fatty acids boost the effectiveness of a common breast-cancer drug, tamoxifen.
At a recent health-food conference and tradeshow, I was reminded of a Jimmy Buffet song that says, “We are the people our parents warned us about.” Three acclaimed speakers at the conference agreed that when it comes to feeding our children nutritious foods and keeping them as healthy as possible (both of which are lacking) we have no one to blame but ourselves.

For every tomato and head of lettuce you put in your shopping cart this spring, there is a farmworker in California, Texas, Washington, Florida, Oregon and North Carolina who handpicked it for you. And if the food wasn’t grown organically, there is a good chance a farmworker and a child was exposed to harmful pesticides.
